This study is conducted to know about negotiate meaning and language switching that are used by the lecturer and the students at the Bahasa Inggris I course at second semester of Islamic Education Program at State Islamic collage (STAIN) Tulungagung. The researcher analyzes some problems. They are what factors influence lecturers and university students do language switching, how do, the lecturer and university students conduct language switching, when does lecturer usually use language switching, when do university students use language-switching.
The subject of the study was the lecturer and the students and the second semester of Islamic Education Program of State Islamic Collage (STAIN) Tulungagung. The study used three kinds of instruments. They are observation interview and recording. Observation is way to know about how the lecturer and the students conduct language switching and factors influence lecturers and university students do language switching. Interview is to know when the lecturer and the students use language switching and to know factors influence lecturers and university students do language switching. And recording is to know the dialog between the lecturer and the students.
Based on the researcher observation some reason factors influence lecturers and university students do language switching from the students, from the lecturer, some factors why they do code switch why the lecturer and the students based on the (according Hoffman) are: talking about particular topic, to often request or command and quoting somebody else. Based on the researcher interview there are some times when the lecturer and the students: (the lecturer’s) when the lecturer explain about the material, when the lecturer communicate with the students. (the student’s) when ask to the lecturer, when the lecturer ask in Indonesia.
