Literature is subject which is interesting to be studied. Because by literary work, human can express their life, such as their problems, struggle of life and conflict. They cannot be separated from love, sacrifice, humanity and sorrow. In this study the researcher discusses one of literary works that is novel. He interests with novel, because in the novel, there are many things to be discussed and to be analyzed such as: character, conflict, moral value, etc. The researcher interests with novel entitled” The Swiss Family Robinson” because it contains many useful lessons about survival. Survival is state of continuing to live or exist. Everyone must survive in his/ her life. Everyone will face many problems in his/ her life. Caused the problems of life, sometime, he or she is hopeless. By lessons of survival that is presented by the researcher in his study, he hopes his study about survival will give useful thing to the readers.
Research problems of the study are: 1. How is the plot in the novel? 2. How are the conflicts in the novel? 3. Who are the characters in the novel? 4. What are Robinson’s survivals?
The purposes of this study are: 1) To explain the plot in the novel, 2) To explain the conflicts in the novel, 3) To explain the characters in the novel, 4) To describe the Robinson’s survival.
The research design used in this study is descriptive qualitative method based on its purpose and the types of data. The approach used in this study is an objective approach, since the writer only studies the literary work itself.
The subject of this study is novel entitled “The Swiss Family Robinson“contains quotation of the paragraphs or dialogues in the novel. The procedures of collecting data are: reading frequently the novel “The Swiss Family Robinson, finding out the Robinson’s survival, selecting and picking the data concerning with the purpose of the study, conducting and analyzing toward paragraph and dialogues. After collecting the data, the writer analyzes the data in order to identity and predicts the data related to the purpose of the study, to describe the conclusion based on the data analysis.
Based on the research findings and discussions, the writer gets to know the plot, the conflict, and the characters in the novel “The Swiss Family Robinson. And the last is description the Robinson’s survival. such as: Robinson’s survival, Robinson’s way to overcome the dangers, The result of the Robinson’s survival.
The concept of survival offered by the author of novel is very interesting to be studied. This study writer therefore suggesting further study behind the concept of survival viewed from another point of view.
