There are some reasons which provided the basic for the writer in choosing this topic. By listening to music for Evanescence Songs and reading the lyrics, we may acquire knowledge about how to appreciate literature. Therefore the writer was interested in analyzing the figurative language used in Evanescence’s Songs. The writer decided to give the title of her thesis “An Analysis of Figurative Language Used in Evanescence’s Selected Songs.” The problems of the study are: (1).What are the kinds of figurative language used in Evanescence’s selected songs.(2). What are the meaning of the figurative language used in Evanescence’s selected songs and (3).What are the messages that the writer of song wants to convey.
The objective of the research are to answer the questions about kinds and the meaning of figurative language and message in Evanescence’s selected songs, they are: 1. Bring Me To Life 2. Sweet Sacrifice, 3.Tourniquet, 4.Liquid Blue, 5.Whisper, 6.Cloud Nine, 7. Hello, 8.Haunted, 9.Your Star, and 10.Angel of Mine.
The research design was descriptive research to describe the figurative language. The writer also used literature study to analyze the meaning and the message in Evanescence’s selected songs. Instrument of this study was the writer. The method of collecting data was documentation method. The step how to obtained and collected data to be analyzed by looking for Evanescence’s selected song in internet, reading, listening and understanding songs and some references related to the problems of the study. After the data have been collected, they are analyzed in the following steps: Listening to Evanescence’s selected song and reading all the lyrics text of the songs taken as data. And then identifying the kinds and the meaning of figurative language and the message in Evanescence’s selected songs.
The data presentation was divided into ten divisions as the following: Bring Me To Life, Sweet Sacrifice, Tourniquet, Liquid Blue, Whisper, Cloud Nine, Hello, Haunted, Your Star, and Angel of Mine. The writer chose these songs because these songs contain of figurative language. From the result of the discussion, the figurative language were mostly appear was personification that is the assigning human characteristics to non human, objects, abstraction or ideas. The writer also found some connotative words, and the message that appear in these songs generally about love, that is when you have a soul mate in your life, don’t ignore and hurt him/her because if he/she goes away from you, you will realize that you have lost a precious thing in your life.
Finally, the writer suggested the readers, students, and researchers who are interested in analyzing different point of view because there are still many elements have not been analyzed yet.
