Analyzing literature means analyzing human life as experiences, ideas, motivations, emotions or expectations which are expressed in the words. Literature also pays attention to the social life reflected at that time. Literature and psychology have the same object; human, and do the same function as the study of human’s states of psyche. What differs between them is only in the space, object in the literary works is human, behavior, and mentality appear in the text as the imaginative world. But, for psychology, the object is human, behavior and mentality in the real world.
Officially Dead is one of the novel written by Richard Prescott explored the problem of family. Collin as a main character is in the difficult position, he got problem in his job. He must get much money as much as possible and get it as soon as possible to make his company survive. At that time, John who has identical features (with Colin) was asked by his wife to rob. Moreover, Colin asked to help John with his identity. They have dilemma about this phenomena.
Thus, this study, is aimed to describe how the id, ego and superego of Collin and John personality to making decision. Then to achieve the problem of the study, the researcher use psychoanalysis of literary as one method of the research. Moreover, the data of this research are collected from Richard Prescott’s Officially Dead. The researcher herself becomes the research instrument in the process of data collection and data analysis.
Based on the researcher’s analysis, the id, ego and superego of both Collin and John take the place in every decision they have made, there are many data that supported this statement. In addition, the conflict of id, ego and superego also happened in their psyche. The id which is guided by pleasure principles, the ego guided by reality principle, and superego guided by morality principle have important roles in establishment of Collin and John’s psychological dilemma.
