Vocabulary is the most important element that will become the basic competence in order to get others competences like listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Vocabulary is also as the fundamental component to enable the students to speak English.
This research problem can be formulated as follows: “How can the use of picture card increase the seventh grade students’ English vocabulary mastery at MTsN Pulosari Ngunut Tulungagung in the academic year of 2011/2012?â€
Based on the preliminary study, it was found that only 11 from 33 students got score above 60 that was stated as minimum score should be reached by students. 14 students got 60 and 8 students failed the vocabulary test.
In line with the above condition, the study is intended to increase the students’ English vocabulary mastery using picture cards.
The design of this research was Classroom Action Research which was adopted from Kemmis and Mc. Taggart theory. The procedure of the research consists of four steps, namely: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The research was conducted in two cycles; each cycle was ended by giving a test to evaluate the vocabulary mastery of the students. The data of the study were obtained from the following research instruments: a teacher observation sheet, a students’ observation sheet, students’ vocabulary test score sheet, questionnaire and documentation.
The result showed that the implementation of using picture cards increased the students’ English vocabulary mastery. Besides, it made the students more active and motivated in learning English. The improvement was indicated by the increasing of the students’ mean score of vocabulary test conducted at the end of each cycle. From the result of vocabulary test in preliminary study, it was found out that the students’ mean score was 59.51. After conducting 2 cycles, it was found out that the students’ mean score was 63.51 in cycle 1 and 70.78 in cycle 2. In cycle 2 indicated that the students’ English vocabulary mastery improved. It proved that the implementation of picture cards in teaching English can improve students’ English vocabulary mastery.
