In general modern Islamic boarding schools are Islamic educational institutions, where the study of religious and non religious sciences, as well as foreign languages, such as Arabic and English, take place. Modern Islamic boarding school use English as one of its formal language. English teaching and learning is committed in the class and outside class. English teaching and learning outside of the classroom make students more practice so that the learners can improve especially their speaking skill.
The research problems of this study were: (1) what are the materials used by the teacher in the teaching and learning speaking outside classroom at modern Islamic boarding school of Mamba’us Sholihin? (2) What is the method used by the teacher in teaching and learning speaking outside classroom at modern Islamic boarding school of Mamba’us Sholihin? (3) How do the students learn English speaking outside classroom at modern Islamic boarding school of Mamba’us Sholihin?
The purposes of the study were: (1) To describe the materials used by the teacher in teaching and learning speaking outside classroom at modern Islamic boarding school of Mamba’us Sholihin, (2) To describe the method used by the teacher in teaching and learning speaking outside classroom at modern Islamic boarding school of Mamba’us Sholihin, (3) To describe how the students learn English speaking outside classroom at modern Islamic boarding school of Mamba’us Sholihin.
This thesis arranged base on data use qualitative approach. The informants of the study were the students of modern Islamic boarding school of Mamba’us Sholihin and the teacher of Mamba’us Sholihin. The methods of collecting data used were observation, interview, and documentation and then those methods were analyzed by inductive.
The Research findings were English teaching and learning outside classroom especially speaking. The material was drilling vocabularies for speaking. But the teacher also taught about grammar, listening, reading, and writing. So, four aspects were covered.
The method used in teaching and learning was audio lingual method. The language was taught by systematic attention to pronunciation and by intensive oral drilling.
The students’ activities to learn speaking were language courses (English and Arabic), conversation, speech, drill, and language camp. So, there were five activities to improve students’ speaking ability.
