Writing is produce or reproduce written message.And grammatical cohesive devices will help to decode the message by recognizing the writing signs. For students in the junior high school level, studying both of them is important because those are can help the students to improve or even master in English as foreign language.
The research problems proposed in this study are: 1) How is the students’ mastery of grammatical cohesive device at MTs Ma’arif Karangan Trenggalek? 2) How is the students’ writing paragraph ability at MTs Ma’arif Karangan Trenggalek? 3) Is there any correlation between the students’ mastery grammatical cohesive devices and writing paragraph ability at MTs Ma’arif Karangan Trenggalek?
This study was conducted to investigate the correlation between the students’ mastery on grammatical cohesive devices and writing paragraph ability at MTs Ma’arif Karangan Trenggalek. The purposes of this study are to know the students’ mastery on grammatical cohesive devices and their writing paragraph ability by viewing their score. Then, find out the correlation between mastery on grammatical cohesive devices and writing paragraph ability.
The Research Method of this study are : 1) the research design in this study was correlatinal research analysis with quantitative approach, 2) the population of this study was all of students of 2nd year at MTs.Ma’arif Karangan Trenggalek consisting of 39 students, 3) the sample was VIIIA class consisting of 20 students, 4) the research instrument was test, 5) The data analysis was using statistical tecnique,using the formula of Karl Pearson.
The Result of this study showed that 1) the students’ score in grammatical cohesive devices was in the mean score was 6.2. The highest score was 9 and the lowest score was 5.It can be said that the students’ mastery on grammatical cohesive devices was enough. 2) The students score in writing paragraph ability was in the mean score was 7.15, the highest score was 9 and the lowest score was 6. It can be said that the students’ writing paragraph ability was good. 3) rxy = 0.44, Based on the interpretation number of index value r Pearson Product moment rxy= 0.44.It there’s on lies of table of coefficient correlation level are 0.40 - 0.70.It meant that the correlation was positive and its include in the interpretation of correlation was enough and rxy = 0.44, the criteria value of “ r “ Pearson Product Moment with df 18 (N=20) was stated 0,444 at 5 % significant level. And the score was same with the table of significant level.So, The Students’ Mastery on Grammatical Cohesive Devices and Writing Paragraph Ability at MTs.Ma’arif Karangan can be said in enough (good) mastery.
