ABSTRACT : The study of Islam has been practiced since the era of the prophet Muhammad. However, it gained its popularity in the modern era. One important aspect in the development of Islamic study in the employment of historical approach. There are several definitions related to the concept of history, but all of them mean the same thing, that is dealing with something inthe past and its role in the development of the future. When historical approach is used in conducting a research, the researcher can take portraits of many religious events of which the features of religious phenomenouns can be found out. The procedures for conducting a research dealing with the history of religion are, preparation, collecting sources of history (heuristic), criticizing the sources of history, interpreting the sources of history and writing the history.
