In teaching English to young learner especially teaching vocabulary, a teacher has to know the characters of the students. As young learners, they have short concentration to remember every new word or things. Based on the characteristic of young learners above, a teacher must prepare the teaching technique that implies that character, the context, and interest them. In SDN Kedungwilut Bandung, the students get difficulty in English. They felt English is a difficult lesson, because their teacher teaches just with students worksheet and never explain material clearly. So it makes them did not interest about English lesson. They did not fun and enjoy to follow this lesson. In this case they can not enrich their vocabulary mastery. This condition makes English difficult to the most students to learn.
Based on the constructivism philosophy, Contextual Teaching Learning (CTL) is promoted as one of the alternative in new learning strategy. By applying CTL , the students are hoped to learn by experience not memorize. So that the writer assumes that CTL technique is effective in teaching vocabulary at SDN Kedungwilut Bandung .
The purpose of the study are to describe how is the application of CTL in teaching vocabulary to the fourth grade students at SDN Kedungwilut Bandung and to describe the effectiveness of CTL Technique in teaching vocabulary at the fourth B grade students of SDN Kedungwilut Bandung .
The researcher uses pra-experimental which one variable. Experimental design is a way to know that CTL technique is effective or not in teaching vocabulary. The instruments used in this researcher are interview, observation, and test. The first is interview. At first, the researcher asks the teacher about the process of teaching learning used in the class. In observation, the researcher his friends to observe the application of TCL technique in teaching vocabulary by filling the observation checklist. The following treatment is test. There are two tests used, they are pre-test and post-test. The aim of pre-test in 40 minutes. Based on their test result, the students’ score in post-test is 82.9. To know the effectiveness of the CTL technique in teaching vocabulary, the researcher compares the pre-test score with the post- test score by using t-test.
It is found that the t-value was 12. the result is compared with the table of t-value at 0.05 level significance. The value is higher than t-value limit at the table of t-value that was 2.056 at 5 % . This means that CTL Technique can improve students mastery vocabulary . Therefore, CTL technique is effective in teaching vocabulary.
I implies that the students who have interest and motivation in learning English will get more ability to understand and absorb the English lesson. They felt enjoy and fun to follow this
