Literature is a reflection of the society, a writer appeals to our feelings, emotions through various element of literature. One of literature element that does not make the readers get bored but makes feel free and happy is drama or play. Main character is a protagonist, one who plays the first part, chief actor or the central or primary personal figure of a story. Characterization is the process of conveying information about characters in narrative or dramatic works of art or everyday conversation. Character and characterization are element of literary work, both of them very needed to construct a story. In this study, the writer tries to study and answer some question arise from the stories “Macbeth†written by William Shakespeare. The research question are how is the characterization of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. The purposes of the study are to find out the characterization of the main character of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. The writer applies a descriptive research because she directly observes the drama, then, used library research to get suitable data for answering the problems stated previously. For the depth of analysing the story, the writer takes characterization of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth as central character of this drama.
The writer found that Macbeth is courages person as general army of King Scotland he become Co-leader. He also ambitious person,he is ambitious to be come king of Scotland. Macbeth was a very ordinary man whose ambition was great and who wished to stand well with the world, but he was unprincipled and refrained from wrong doing only from custom or from fear being found out. It is his unprincipled ambition and his crimes to attain that ambition that make the theme of this tragedy. Characterization of Lady Macbeth is strongly dependent on imagery and progresses dramatically with the advancement of the play. At the beginning of the play, Lady Macbeth is introduced as a dominant, controlling, heartless wife with an obsessive ambition to achieve kingship for her husband. After she learns of her husband’s plan to murder Duncan, she realizes that her husband is not man enough to commit the murder.
At the last, it is hoped that the result of this study can be used as referrences for the readers, teachers, and other researcher. The writer hope this research will give contribution those who need it or relating to this discussion.
