There are some ways to express ideas, especially in a literary work. Literature is subject which is interesting to be reading and studied. Because by reading literary work, human can express their life, such as their problems, struggle of life and conflict. They cannot have separated from love, sacrifice, humanity, and sorrow. In this study the researcher discusses one of literary works that is novel. He is interested with a novel, because in the novel, there are many things to be discussed and to be analyzed such as: character, conflict, moral value, etc. The researcher interests with novel entitled” Our Mutual Friend” because the novel contents some conflicts that make human being learn about human life. By considerate learning of contribution of main conflict that is presented by the researcher in his study, he hopes his study about contribution of main character conflict will give useful thing to the readers.
Research problems of the study are; 1. Who is the main character in the novel? 2. How are the conflicts in the novel? 3. How is the plot in the novel? 4. How do the conflicts of the main character build the plot?
The purposes of this study are: 1) To explain who are the main character in the novel, 2) To explain the conflict was happened in the novel, 3) To explain the plot in the novel, 4) To explain how the conflicts build the plot.
The research design used in this study is descriptive qualitative approach based on its purpose and the types of data. The approach used in this study is psychological and social approach, the writer studies the literary work, and extrinsic elements.
The subject of this study is novel entitled “Our Mutual Friend” contains quotation of the paragraphs or dialogues in the novel. The procedures of collecting data are: reading frequently the novel “Our Mutual Friend, finding out the conflict, selecting and picking the data concerning with the purpose of the study, conducting and analyzing toward paragraph and dialogues. After collecting the data, the writer analyzes the data in order to identity and predicts the data related to the purpose of the study, to describe the conclusion based on the data analysis.
Based on the research findings and discussions, the writer gets to know the plot, begin from the main character come back to his home for inherited by the condition marry with the girl he never met before, but at the last his journey he reportedly murderer. He appears with the other name to get some information about the girl by the live in the girl houses and work at the father house as a secretary. He try to explore his feel to girl, but the girl rejected, because he as a poor man. But she know that money not everything, and then she accepted the man as a husband. The conflict, the main character has the internal conflict with itself and external conflict with the social condition. and the characters of main character in the novel “Our Mutual Friend’. and the last is description the contribution of main characters conflicts to build the plot, the main characters conflicts has internal conflict with itself and external conflict with the social condition that influence of industry revolution. That is make the people more interesting with money, glamour life, divide the caste of life, first, society for the rich people, second, the people work for the poor people.
The concept of this research is how the main character conflict can be improving the plot and make the story more interesting to studied.
