In Indonesian Elementary School, English is giving to the students with some methods of teaching. One of the methods is using games and songs. Games and English song gave influence on students’ English learning in the class. Games and songs are especially very important components for an English class in the Elementary School. Therefore, the writer was interested in studying how an English teacher at Elementary School teaches the students by using games and English song.
The researcher would like to find out the following research questions, they are: 1) What kinds of games and songs are used by the teacher in teaching English at SD Negeri Selorejo Tulungagung?, 2) How does the teacher apply the games and songs in class activities at SD Negeri Selorejo Tulungagung?, 3) What are the advantages and disadvantages of teaching and learning English by using games and songs at SD Negeri Selorejo Tulungagung?
The purposes of the study are directed to get the answer of the formulated problems, they are as follows: 1) To know what kinds of games and songs are used by the teacher in teaching English. 2) To know how the teacher applies the games and songs in class activities. 3) To know the advantages and disadvantages of teaching and learning English by using games and songs at SD Negeri Selorejo Tulungagung.
This study uses descriptive design.The subject of the research is an English teacher who teaches in the sixth grade students at SD Negeri Selorejo Tulungagung.The data collection is conducted in three month, from 1st April 2011 to 27th July 2011, by using observation and interview. But the researcher will come into the teaching and learning process in the class only for two weeks.The data analysis is divided into three phases, they are: Data Reduction, Data Display and Drawing Conclusion.
Based on the data analysis, the writer found that the teacher used games and songs in teaching material. Through interview, the writer got that the
games used by the teacher were: 1) puzzle, 2) matching games, 3) guessing games
When the writer did the observation,the teacher apply the games used paper, and ask for the student to answer the question on the paper. For the songs, the teacher took English song and changed Indonesian children songs into English. By this technique, the teacher got more easily to teach English in class activities. It is not only make the students memorize the word but also had a good pronunciation.
The advantages, the students of SD Negeri Selorejo Tulungagung not only easy to understand to learn about english and memorize the vocabularies but also they can practice spelling easily, The class situation more excited, The students more enjoyble in learning English, Especialy for songs, the students can learn pronunciation so fast, They want to study English again by using games. The disadvantages of using Games and song are, Games and song cannot be given every meeting, Games makes the siituation more crouded, If the games activities take too seriously and waste their time, Some songs’ lyric are not grammatically correct, student must learn pronunciation fisrt before singging, so it waste of time, Some students cannot follow the teacher instruction.
