People use formal and informal language in their daily communication. Communication is being able to make people be more familiar and chummy. Because of solidarity/familiarity, it will be difference of communication. In the relation of persons will be made social harmony in the area continuously. Yet, what will be done it can be done, because of difference persons. According to Geoffrey Leech by proposing politeness maxims in conversation have six maxims; Tact maxim, Generosity, Approbation, Modesty, Agreement, and Sympathy maxim.
The research problems focus on the conversation by people in Dukuh Kupang Surabaya while the specific research problems are (1) how is the realization of politeness maxims in the conversations among people in Jalan jarak Dukuh kupang Surabaya? (2) how do their utterances comply with politeness principle?
The general objective of this study is to describe the politeness maxims in the conversations, while the specific objectives are (1) to find out how is the realization of politeness maxims in the conversations among people in Jalan Jarak Dukuh Kupang Surabaya (2) to find out how do their utterances comply with politeness principle. The research design of this study is descriptive research with qualitative approach. The data collecting method is recording. The sources of data this study is the conversation taken from 58 conversations from 12th May 2010 to 30th May 2010. There are three mayor steps for analyzing the data, they are; (1) data reduction (2) data presentation (3) raising conclusion. In the data analysis technique the writer used method of analytical reflection and theoretical based on Leech (PP) to reach the adequate conclusion.
The result shows that violating the six maxims theory Leech. There are many data that violate six Maxims Leech Theory, some of them are someone who have known and intimate. Data have been taken by using recording are 58 data and than have been analyzed by using six maxim theory Leech. The result of the analysis demonstrates that, a) 5 from 58 data have fulfilled condition modesty maxim and 1 is not fulfill, b). 6 from 58 data have fulfilled condition Generosity maxim and 6 are not fulfill, c). 3 from 58 have fulfilled condition Approbation maxim and 5 are not fulfill, d). 11 from 58 have fulfilled condition Tact maxim and 8 are not fulfill, e). 16 from 58 have fulfilled condition Agreement maxim and 5 are not fulfill, f). 5 from 58 have fulfilled condition Sympathy maxim and 2 are not fulfill, From the data above is known that 73, 32% from 58 data proof a part of the people who was intimate, they are ignored politeness principle and 26, 68% from the 58 data proof that the people who was not intimate yet or have difference situation, they always fulfill politeness Leech principle.
