Language as a means of interpersonal communication is realized in words or word structure. In order that communication can work well, understanding language is absolutely needed. One of the ways to understand a language is by studying its structure. Language structure comprehension is closely related to the branch of linguistics, that is, morphology and syntax. This research studies the morphological pattern of adjective word used in narrative text. In this case, the researcher tried to know the morphological pattern of adjective words used in narrative texts and its frequencies.
Formulations of the research problem are: 1) what are the morphological pattern of adjective words used in narrative texts in senior high school English books? .2) How are the frequencies of occurrences of each types of morphological pattern of adjective word used in narrative texts in senior high school English books?
The purpose of this study are: 1) To know the morphological patterns of adjective words used in narrative texts in senior high school books Grade X. 2) To know the frequencies of occurrence of each type of morphological pattern of adjective words used in narrative texts in senior high school books grade X.
In this research, the researcher used a “descriptive research design “with quantitative approach. This method was used to know the morphological pattern of adjective word used in narrative texts in senior high school English books. Population of this research is all adjective words used in narrative texts in senior high school books grade X. The sample in this study is all adjective words used in 39 narraritive texts in 7 senior high schol books grade X. The sampling technique that used by the researcher is purposive sampling.The researcher’s reason using this technique because of the limited number of samples examined.
The result of this research shows the variety of adjective pattern and its frequencies. In the narrative text that have been analyzed by the researcher, there are 120 morphological pattern of base adjective, 5 frequencies of adjective pattern “prefix + root wordâ€, 192 frequencies of adjective pattern “root word + suffix†,and 9 frequencies of adjective pattern “prefix + root words + suffixâ€.
In relation to the result of this research, the writer suggests to the teacher to emphasize on the most occurred types of adjective pattern. The teacher better to give the students suppression about the marker of adjective({–able} or {–ible},{–ent} or {–ant},{–ive},{–ed},{–ing},{-en},{–ful},{–less}, {–al},{–ous},{–y},{–ly}) and how the adjective derive from other word classes. For students, the authors propose to learn more word patterns, because it will make them easier to understand a word. For material developer, the authors suggested them to pay more attention of word selection that will be used besides the topics to be conveyed. This is based on the results of study showing that the adjective that often occurs is the adjective derived from another word class. The last, For the next researcher, the writer hope they will analyze the other pattern of words, so it will enrich our knowledge about word patterns and thus will improve reading skills.
At the last, it is hoped that the result of this study can be used as referrences for the teachers, materiel developer and the other researcher. Authors hope this research will give contribution those who need it or relating to this discussion.
