This study was designed to improve the students’ mastery on vocabulary by using “Audio Lingual Methodâ€. It was conducted in order to find a model of teaching and learning English, especially in vocabulary class. In its application, this study was done in cycles involving planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting.
This method was selected because it was believed to be able to stimulate the students to be more involved in the teaching and learning process. Thus, this study was directed to solve practical problem in the process of teaching and learning. The research problem was formulated as: “How can the fifth year students’ mastery on vocabulary at SDN Kemloko 02 be improved through the developed Audio Lingual Method?
This classroom action research, which is done to solve the problems faced in SDN Kemloko 02 Nglegok Blitar is focused on students mastery on vocabulary. The problem in teaching and learning process is that the students feel that English as one difficult subject. The majority of the students had low motivation and interest.
Research method: 1) the research design in this study was classroom action research, 2) the subject of this study was all students of fifth year at SDN Kemloko 02 Nglegok Blitar consisting of 14 students, 3) the research instruments were test, observation sheet and interview.
This action research involved two cycles and each cycle consists of two meetings. The implementation of audio lingual method in each cycle of the teaching and learning process consists of four steps; they was planning, acting, observing and reflecting. Some finding in Cycle 1 needed to be improved the explanation of the researcher was too fast. So, the students could not understand the material well. Beside, some findings could be examined from Cycle 2, the researcher tried to increase the student’s involvement by giving support and motivation to all the students.
The result of the action research Cycle 1 and Cycle 2 showed that the student’s mastery on vocabulary had improved through the implementation of audio lingual method. It is clearly that the observation by the researcher is increase. The indicator was that the obtained shown the students are interest in English; they can answer the teacher’s questions without afraid. It indicated that the implementation of using audio lingual method was successful. In its application, the teacher did the introduction about audio lingual method and gave motivation to the students.
The researcher gave some suggestions for teacher and other researchers who planning to make audio lingual method for teaching vocabulary. The teacher and other researcher can be used audio lingual method for references in teaching vocabulary and for student can make easy to understand the material.
