Writing is one of the English skills used as a communication between the writer and the readers. In the second year of the senior high school, the students are expected to be able to master writing, especially in writing narrative text. Narrative text is the text that is to tell story in the past with the purpose is to amuse the reader. In this text uses past tenses in the sentences, because this text is to tell story in the past, so it is important for students to master past tenses in order to be able to write a narrative text.
The statements of the problem are; 1. How is the students’ ability in using past tenses? 2. How is the students’ ability in writing narrative text? 3. Is there any correlation between students’ past tenses ability and the ability in writing narrative text?
The purposes of this study were to: 1. Know the students’ ability in using past tenses. 2. Know the students’ ability in writing narrative text. 3. Know the correlation between students’ past tenses ability and the ability in writing narrative text.
Research Method: 1) the research design in this research was descriptive correlative, 2) the population of this research was the second year students of MAN Rejotangan Tulungagung, 3) the sample was class XI language consisting of 25 students, 4) the research instrument was test and documentation, 5) the data analysis was using mean score and Pearson Product moment correlation.
The result of the research showed that the mean score of grammar test is 76.1250. So, it can be stated that the students’ past tenses ability is good, because it is in the level 70-79. The mean score of writing test is 67.7083. So, it can be stated that the students’ ability in writing narrative text is fair, because the score is in the level 60-69. The sig. (2 tailed) that is 0.030 is lower than level of significant (a) 1%, then Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. In other words, there is a correlation between past tenses ability and the ability in writing narrative text.
