Literature is the expression of life in the word of truth and beauty, it is the writer’s record of man’s spirit of the though, emotion, expression. Literature has been regarded as profound human creation to express ideas, or thoughts. It has also been regarded as a great human treasure. In this study the writer chooses novel as the subject of study. It is a kind of literary works presenting many kinds of view, value and giving some fun and sadness for everyone who reads. By reading novel, the reader may find the conflict that are showed by characters and the conflicts around the character’s life. In addition, the reader may acquire amusement that will lead them to a keen perception of beauty and make them sensitive to artistic work in general. Conflict always happen in our daily life. Just like in real world, there is a conflict in a novel. It makes the reader curios what will happen in the next. Without conflict, a novel will lose its sense.
The formulation of the research problems were: 1) What are the external conflicts faced by the main character? 2)What are internal conflicts faced by the main character? 3)What are the causes of conflict faced by the main character? 4)What are the effects of conflict to the main character?
The purpose of the study were to: 1)To explain external conflicts faced by the main character in the novel “Officially Dead”. 2)To explain internal conflicts faced by the main character in the novel “Officially Dead”. 3)To explain the causes of conflict faced by the main character in the novel “Officially Dead”. 4)To explain the effects of conflict to the main character in the novel “Officially Dead”.
Research Method: 1) the researh design in this study was descriptive qualitative method based on its purpose and the types of data. 2) the subject of this study was a novel by Richard Prescott.
The result showed that the external conflict found in this novel are mostly between human and human conflict. But, there are another conflict happen. They are between human and nature, and human and situation. The internal conflict found in this novel is come from the character’s mind. Conflicts happen caused by helplesness, responsibleness, surprise, worry, hesitation, confusion, anger, shock and jealousy. Effect of conflict to the main characters are lie, responsibleness, worry, hesitation, confusion, jealousy, anger, helplessness, rudeness, and fight.

Sastra adalah kehidupan yang diekspresikan melalui kata-kata dan keindahan, merupakan rekaman semangat, emosi, dan ekspresi manusia. Sastra dikenal sebagai suatu kreasi manusia untuk mengungkapkan ide-ide dan pemikiran. Sastra merupakan harta karun manusia yang paling berharga. Dalam penelitian ini penulis memilih novel sebagai subyek penelitian. Novel merupakan salah satu jenis karya sastra yang menyajikan berbagai jenis pandangan, nilai, serta dapat memberikan hiburan bagi siapapun ynag membacanya. Dengan membaca novel, pembaca mungkin menemukan konflik yang terjadi pada tokoh dan kehidupannya yang tersaji dalam novel tersebut. Terlebih lagi, pembaca mendapatkan hiburan yang memungkinkan mereka untuk lebih kritis trhadap karya sastra. Konflik selalu terjadi di dalam kehidupan. Begitu juga di dalam novel. Dengan adanya konflik pada novel, pembaca akan merasa penasaran terhadap kelanjutan cerita yang dibaca. Tanpa adanya konflik suatu novel akan tidak berarti apa-apa.
Rumusan masalah dalam penelitian ini adalah : 1) Apa sajakah konflik eksternal yang dihadapi oleh tokoh utama?, 2) Apa sajakah konflik internal yang dihadapi oleh tokoh utama?, 3) Apa penyebab timbulnya konflik yang dihadapi oleh tokoh utama?, 4) Apa sajakah efek dari konflik yang dihadapi oleh tokoh utama?
Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah: 1) Untuk mengetahui konflik eksernal yang dihadapi oleh tokoh utama, 2) Untuk mengetahui konflik internal yang dihadapi oleh tokoh utama, 3) Untuk mengetahui penyebab konflik yang terjadi pada tokoh utama, 4) Untuk mengetahui efek dari konflik terhadap tokoh utama.
Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah: 1) deskriptif kualitatif berdasarkan data-data yang digunakan, 2) subyek penelitian ini adalah novel yang dikarang oleh Richard Prescott.
Hasil yang diperoleh dari penelitian ini adalah eksternal konflik yang dihadapi oleh tokoh utama kebanyakan terjadi antara tokoh-tokoh itu sendiri. Tetapi ada juga pertentangan antara tokoh utama dengan alam, ataupun dengan situasi yang sedang dihadapinya. Sedangkan konflik internal terjadi didalam pikiran tokoh utama itu sendiri. Konflik-konflik itu sendiri terjadi karena ketidakberdayaan, kebertanggungjawaban, keterkejutan, kekhawatiran, keragu-raguan, keterbingungan, kemarahan, dan kecemburuan. Efek dari konflik terhadap tokoh utama adalah kebohongan, kebertanggungjawaban, kekhawatiran, keragu-raguan, keterbingungan, kecemburuan, kemarahan, ketidakberdayaan, perilaku kasar, dan perkelahian.
