It is absolutely realized that many English teachers do not know how to teach English especially to elementary students. At the same time, the gap between what the teacher should do in the process of teaching and learning and the absence of teacher’s knowledge of good method in teaching English makes the researcher conducts the study.
The formulations of the study are : (1) How is TPR (Total Physical Response) method implemented in teaching English to elementary student in SDN Setonorejo II Kras Kediri? (2) How are the students’ responses when they are taught using TPR method? (3) What are the problems faced by the teacher in the teaching English using TPR method? (4) What are the solutions taken by the teacher to solve the problems?
The objective of the research are : (1) To know the implementation of TPR (Total Physical Response) method in teaching English to elementary student in SDN Setonorejo II Kras Kediri. (2) To know the students’ responses when they are taught using TPR (Total Physical Response method). (3) To know the problems faced by the teacher in the teaching English using TPR (Total Physical Response) method. (4) To know the solutions taken by the teacher to solve the problems.
The significance of the research are : For the teacher is to : (1) give contribution of understanding about the application of TPR method in teaching English to elementary student. (2) To provide additional information to improve the quality of teaching to reach the goal. (3) To increase the better techniques in teaching English at elementary school. For the students is to increase the student’s interest in learning English. For the headmaster is expected to facilitate the English teacher in conducting her or his teaching. For the writer is to get useful experiences in teaching English using TPR (Total Physical Response) method.
The research design used in this research is descriptive with qualitative approach. The subject of the study are the fourth grade students and the English teacher of SDN Setonorejo II Kras Kediri. The research instruments used to collect the data were observation, interview and documentation. To analyze the data, the researcher used inductive method.
After analyzing the data, it can be concluded : (1) In teaching English to the fourth grade students using TPR (Total Physical Response) method , the teacher used some action sequences, they are : listen and speak, listen and write, listen and move, dialogue and role play. (2) The students’ responses when they are taught using TPR (Total Physical Response) method were good. It can be known from the researcher’s observation, information from the teacher and the students’ statements that they felt fun, enjoy, interested and they could understand the lesson easily when they are taught using TPR (Total Physical Response) method. (3) The teacher’s problem in teaching English using TPR (Total Physical Response) method are : (a) This method spends much time when it was applied. (b) The teacher is must be active and creative. (4) The solutions taken by the teacher to solve the problem are : (a) Before teaching, the teacher prepares everything needed in the process of teaching and learning such as media, the students’ seats, a note before teaching and etc. (b) The teacher tries to learn how to teach English especially for children by reading some articles from the internet.
At last, it is hoped that the result of this study can be used as the alternative method for the English teacher in teaching English to her student.
